Canadian prints

Yesterday was the opening party for the Canadian side of the Japanese Canadian Exchange show at B-gallery. Most of the works are quite large but somehow managed to fit perfectly in the space, and although there is a wide variety of print techniques and styles, the show came together very well.
I didn't actually take any photos of the set-up or event but there is a photo on the gallery owner Haruka Cho's blog taken after the installation was completed.

Opening on Tuesday

There will be an opening reception for the Japan x Canada Contemporary Art Exhibition 2012 on Tuesday at 6! If you can't make it to the opening, please feel free to check it out whenever you have time.

アルミ版

土曜日にYANAGIDAのアルミ版研磨工場を見学しました。PS版の裏を研磨して、リトグラフ用のアルミ版として再利用します。
I had the joy of visiting a ball-grain plate factory this weekend. Ball grain plates are aluminum plates that have been grained with glass beads, grit and water, in order to give them a texture similar to a litho stone.

Old PS-plates are placed face down onto a rubber mat.
Turn on the machine and the glass beads start shaking around.
Mix in some 220 grit and water, let the beads grind a texture into the plate and you're done!

I don't think I will ever get bored of carving lino.

Matsuri

I was invited by a friend to participate in Sanja-matsuri, a huge festival held every year in May in Asakusa. Everyone dresses up and carries their 町会 (neighbourhood)'s mikoshi around (a lot more strenuous than it appears). I was really impressed with everyone's energy and teamwork. It was a really wonderful experience!

Canada

This past year, I seem to have made quite a few prints about Canada. I don't think it is so much because I miss Canada and/or feel patriotic but rather that the longer I am away, the more I find myself questioning what it means to be Canadian and what kind of country Canada really is.
This is my most recent small print. Above is the drawing on the plate before rolling up with ink.
The black layer printed quite nicely, but it took a lot of proofs to get it to a point I liked.
After the first flat, I will be printing the second (and final) flat tomorrow.
